With weight gain and after childbirth, the abdominal area often has loose or sagging skin which may also involve stretching of the abdominal wall and muscles. There may also be herniation from tears in the abdominal wall.
Abdominoplasty removes loose skin, tightens the abdominal wall muscles and repairs any hernias. Often times this procedure can be done at the same time that liposuction is done to remove the fat.
The abdominal scars are usually just above the pubic area and around the belly button and in most cases fade over time. The scars are normally concealed by normal swimwear and clothing.
In addition to excess skin removal and tightening of the skin, the surgery can tighten the abdominal wall.
