Breast augmentation is the clinical term for breast enlargement. The goal of breast augmentation is to enhance a patient's natural proportions and create a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing breast profile. We tailor each augmentation with your particular needs. This is accomplished by breast implants or fat transfer, in order to increase the size of your breasts or restore the volume that typically follows breastfeeding, aging, and weight loss. Breast implantation also can be used for reconstruction after breast cancer surgery or injury.
It is important to realize what breast augmentation will not accomplish. It will not typically correct saggy breasts. The procedure to correct saggy breasts is called mastopexy or breast lifting. Oftentimes, mastopexy is done at the same time as augmentation if necessary.
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the volume of breast tissue that may be causing pain, or contribute to overall weight issues.
Most breast surgery is done under general anesthesia so that you do not experience pain during the procedure. It is crucial that breast surgery is done under the safest of conditions. Therefore all of our breast surgery is done in the hospital or surgical center, by our board certified plastic surgeon on an outpatient basis so you go home after the procedure. Anesthesia is under the direction of the physician head of anesthesia at the hospital or surgical center. None of our breast surgery is done in the office and it is highly recommended that as a consumer and patient, you maximize the safety of your breast surgery by having this done only by a board certified plastic surgeon outside the office setting and in a certified hospital or surgical center.
There has never been a better time to consider breast surgery since there are more choices today than ever before to customize how you want to look and feel.
There are implants made of saline, silicone and highly cohesive silicone (gummy bear implants). There are some differences in appearance and feel as well as incision requirements and our doctors will help guide you as to what would be best for you to consider.
The shape can also be a factor, with silicone giving one a more natural breast profile and the saline implants a fuller upper pole profile of the breast, enhancing cleavage.
Size is also a consideration and can vary depending on your height and weight and your desired look.
Scars are minimal and where they occur depends upon the type of surgery performed. They are typically well hidden and inconspicuous. There are various types of incisions from inframammary (hidden in the crease below the breast) to peri-areolar which occur around the nipple and are often done when breast lifting is added, to trans- axillary or under the armpit. In some cases, a trans-umbilical approach is also done, which is a small incision above the belly button. This tends to minimize scarring and reduces breast tissue scarring as does the trans-axillary approach.
How Will I Feel After My Surgery?
You will leave the surgical center or hospital a few hours after your surgery and will be up and walking around a few hours later. Most are up to leaving the house to begin normal activities except exercise within a day or two. Most return to work within one week of surgery. Pain is minimized with pain pills for a few days post surgery.
